How visually appealing is artificial grass?

My name is Tom Bentley and I chose to go waterless with fake grass in 2003. I am so glad I did. I had the same concerns as anyone about synthetic grass but as I researched different options my fears were allayed. What was of most interest to me was that fake grass is really tough, a reason why football players and soccer teams choose to play on it.

I am convinced that synthetic grass is the smart choice for any home owner who wants to improve the look of the property while saving money in not having to spend on maintenance costs. Also, I noticed that my fruit trees were safe from hungry birds as they are less likely to collect in an area with artificial grass due to the absence of nutrients on the ground.

But most of all you might worry that synthetic grass looks like plastic, but over the last year, lots of people have said to me, ‘wow, I really thought that grass was real!’

Not only is Artificial grass a great way to help in reducing water shortages in the UK, Artificial grass, also known a synthetic grass and artificial turf, is a man-made product designed to look like real grass.

It was originally created in the 1960s by David Chaney. It was first noticed by the American public in 1965 when Astroturf, one of the first brand names of artificial grass, was put down in the new Astrodome in Texas.

Faking it: No mowing, no mud and green all year round

A decade ago, no gardener worth their salt would admit to having an artificial lawn. Fake grass was stiff, ugly and an utterly unconvincing substitute for the real thing.

In recent years, however, it has been growing in popularity and respectability, with fans like The X Factor judge Amanda Holden singing its praises.

This year, fake grass even made its debut at the Chelsea Flower Show, when it was used to line a shed roof (although its use is still banned in the show gardens).

The main reason for the increasing acceptance of artificial lawns is the enormous improvement in quality.

The first generation of artificial grass was made of basic quality plastic, became waterlogged and lost its vibrant colour after a few years.

Today’s replica lawns have a porous Latex matting for fast drainage, and keep their colour and shape for over a decade. From a distance, many of them look just like the real thing, and there’s no doubt that they offer some great advantages.

For a start, there’s minimal maintenance involved  –  no mowing, spiking, feeding or watering is required, just the occasional brush and regular hosing down to remove dirt and leaves.

DIY Artificial Grass Installation

The Eight Basics

1) Excavation of ground – depending on existing garden, remove earth to a depth of between 40mm and 70mm below the finishing height.

2) Preparation of sub base material – fill the area with granite chippings to a depth of 10mm below finish height. Rake over and screed the area to the perfect contour for your artificial grass to be installed on. Compact the area with a heavy-duty garden roller or petrol vibrating plate.

3) Geo-tech membrane – cover the whole area with a porous geo- tech membrane (visit our shop for details). Hammer 75mm nails into the ground to keep the membrane in place.

4) Installation of chosen grass – unroll your chosen artificial grass (for information on different options, visit our shop) onto the membrane in a way that maximises the use of the product. Make sure the grass is pulled flat. Be sure that when joining two lengths together that both piles run in the same direction.

5) Preparation for join if needed – once step 5 has been carried out, pull grass roll 1 so that there is an even 5mm gap between role 1 and roll 2. Now fold back the edges of roll 1 and roll 2.

6) Joining tape – lay the joining tape and apply your heavy duty joining glue to joining tape. Carefully roll back both edges of grass so that they meet and glue together.

7) Shaping the edges – cut the perimeter of grass to desired shape with a sharp stanley knife.

8) The final touch – infill and sweep kiln dried sand over the whole area.

DIY Artificial Grass – Guidelines For Measuring

If you decide to install your own artificial grass, it is your responsibility to correctly measure your proposed site, remembering to allow for wastage. Key points to bear in mind:

1. You can choose from 2m or 4m width rolls.

2. Aim to have as few joints as possible.

3. If your site is not a regular square or rectangle, draw the shape of your site to scale on a grid.

Metric / Imperial measurements for reference:

1 metre = 3 feet 3″ approx
2 metres = 6 feet 7″ approx
4 metres = 13 feet 1″ approx
