Fake Grass London – The Ideal Turf for Outdoor Swimming Pools
If you have a private outdoor pool (or are responsible for managing one) maintaining a natural grassed area surrounding it can be a huge headache. This article looks at the common problems associated with real turf beside swimming pools, paddling pools and hot tubs – and how fake grass provides the perfect solution.

Chemical Spillages
Although chlorine in pool water won’t cause natural turf any harm because it is diluted, if you spill pool chemicals directly onto your lawn this will affect grass growth as the chemicals prevent nutrients being extracted from the soil. If you do accidently drop chemicals such as neat chlorine onto the lawn, the best thing to do is to water the grass straight away to dilute the spillage and stop the grass being killed off.
Solution – Dayco synthetic turf is chlorine resistant, so it presents the perfect choice for outdoor pools, paddling pools and leisure centres.
Weed Growth
Even if the grass isn’t directly next to the pool, the turf surrounding it can be ruined by water spray from swimmers jumping or splashing about in the pool. If the grass gets too saturated it can promote moss and weed growth which makes grass look unsightly.
Solution – Weeds can’t grow in artificial grass as the roots can’t break through the backing to survive, so your lawn keeps its looks and you don’t have to spend time weeding.
Insects
Saturated grass attracts more insects which is not only off-putting for swimmers (biting insects will be attracted to exposed flesh), but these bugs can also damage your lawn. Insects that thrive in wet grass in the UK include leather jackets (crane flies in the caterpillar stage that attack grass roots), millipedes, cluster flies, beetles, gnats, midges and mosquitoes. It will also attract molluscs such as slugs and snails – and none of these are fun to have around the pool, especially if you are walking barefoot!
Solution – Although you will find some insects in artificial lawns, it doesn’t produce the kind of environment they like to inhabit. However, insects are attracted to garden debris, so you still need to rake the grass to rid it of fallen leaves in autumn.
Fertilisers in Pool
If nitrogen from the lawn fertiliser gets in the pool water (from swimmers going from the lawn into the pool), it can react with the chlorine and prevent it disinfecting the pool. In the long run it could turn the pool a murky and uninviting green colour.
Solution – As artificial turf doesn’t require any fertilising, your pool will look clear and inviting on the sunniest of days.
Saturated grass can cause the lawn to get boggy and uneven and create worn, brown patches over time. Damaged grass requires an on going maintenance programme to put right which can be costly and time consuming.
Solution – Dayco fake turf is self-draining, so it won’t get muddy and saturated…and, of course, no seeding is necessary.
UV Rays
Rays of sunshine beaming onto the lawn on a hot day can create unpleasant, scorched patches over time. However, this is a common problem in summer and isn’t just associated with grass surrounding pools.
Solution – Dayco synthetic grass is UV resistant, so it keeps its beautiful green colour regardless of the weather.
Grass in Pool
Mowing the gardens surrounding the pool can cause grass cuttings to fly into the pool which have to be fished out with netting.
Solution – As it’s synthetic, rather than natural, high quality fake turf will retain its looks and doesn’t require mowing and maintenance.
Worn Out Lawns
If you leave a paddling pool or inflatable pool on the same patch of grass all summer, it will kill the turf beneath it. Not only that, but if the pool is used frequently by swimmers, it eventually takes its toll on the grass.
Solution – Dayco synthetic grass is extremely durable, so if you do put a splash pool on top of it, the grass base stays the same and will spring back up if you give it a gentle rake once the pool is removed. Fake grass is tough enough to be used in high traffic areas, such as public swimming pools and leisure centres and benefits from being pleasantly soft underfoot.
