Courtyard gardens are grounds enclosed by walls or buildings and vary wildly in size from a small area, just a few feet in length, to large, spacious grounds. Although courtyard gardens are usually found in inner city areas, country homes or seaside cottages can also have this type of outdoor space. Here we take a look at the benefits of artificial garden grass and how it can help counteract various difficulties for courtyards.

Lack of Light – Courtyard gardens in built-up areas such as London often suffer from lack of light – sometimes for the entire day. As a result it leaves little option but to concrete or pave this space. With artificial turf, however, this doesn’t have to be the case as the fake grass will keep its green colour regardless of how much light it attracts. So, it is ideal for terraced homes or communal gardens surrounded by high rise buildings as the grassed area will look neatly manicured all year round.
Insufficient Drainage – Another major problem with inner city courtyard gardens is that they can suffer from lack of natural drainage, such as slopes for water to run into. Courtyard gardens can frequently become wet and boggy which is off-putting for homeowners and results in smaller spaces often becoming badly neglected. Artificial garden grass, however, is self-draining so it won’t be affected by the weather.
Insufficient Rainfall – While some courtyard gardens get too damp, some inner city areas suffer from insufficient rainfall, especially those that are partially or completely covered, or have areas of ground close to high walls. Grassed courtyard areas that don’t have enough rainfall need to be watered either with a hose or by hand, or, for larger areas, a sprinkler system. Synthetic grass, however, eliminates the need to spend time watering this space as it doesn’t require any maintenance.
Too Much Sunlight – While some courtyard gardens get too little sunlight, others become a suntrap at certain times of the day. This can damage plant growth and scorch grassed areas, which will have a knock on affect on its appearance. Dayco artificial grass, however, is UV resistant so it won’t fade on bright days.
Size Restriction – While some courtyard gardens are quite substantial, others are just the opposite which can make them extremely hard to maintain. Courtyard gardens can be too small for storage space, such as a shed to store mowers, shears or edge trimmers, so many homeowners won’t grass this space. Fake grass, however, provides homeowners with a turf option as the grass doesn’t need mowing.
Problem with Access – Some London terraces or mews houses with limited garden space have large windows that look out onto a courtyard which helps bring the light in and makes a home appear more spacious. The problem with these type of gardens is that they are difficult, or in some cases, almost impossible to access. Often they are only accessible via the house, which means trailing a lawnmower or garden tools through the property to keep the grass in check. Fake turf poses a solution as it eliminates these difficulties and will look as good as the day it was installed.
Design Difficulties – Courtyard gardens can pose design difficulties as gardeners have to take into consideration many of the factors above, meaning natural grass could pose a problem for this type of outdoor space. However, with artificial turf you can create unlimited designs including decorative, shaped grassed areas or water features surrounded by synthetic grass.
Too Many Walls – Small courtyards can feel very enclosed and unwelcoming, especially if there is unsightly brick and concrete on all sides. The effect can be softened by introducing greenery on one or more of these walls, such as ivy or other climbing plants. These plants take time to establish, however, and may not provide the level of coverage needed for many years. Covering one or more walls with synthetic turf provides an instant and low-maintenance solution.
