In recent years, Dayco has noticed a rise in the number of primary schools wanting to transform their play areas with fake turf. Artificial lawns have already been installed in hundreds of educational facilities nationwide, with more primary heads following suit as they learn of the benefits of synthetic grass above alternative surfaces.
While natural grass has its pluses, such as facilitating children’s contact with the nature and the environment, there is a strong argument for artificial grass. Here, synthetic grass installers Dayco looks at why fake turf is catching on in schools such as Whitings Hall Primary in Barnet, London.
Safe Surface to Play on
In the past, and still so today, concrete and tarmac have been common surfaces in primary school playgrounds. However, pupils are more likely to injure themselves as they crawl, jump about and fall on hard play surfaces. In addition, tarmac has been known to crack over time, causing a tripping hazard.
Alternatively, synthetic grass provides a soft surface to play on, which gives parents more confidence of their child’s safety at school. The Dayco artificial grass team complies with all the necessary health and safety rules and teachers can choose additional features such as extra cushioning for safe play zones.
Completely Economical
There is a growing need for schools to cut costs, and installing artificial grass is one way to do this. As the grass is completely artificial, it will stay at the same length and keep its vibrant green colour whatever the weather. This means fake turf saves on maintenance charges as it doesn’t require watering or mowing and weeds can’t penetrate it. It has a tough surface, so matter how much the grass is played on, the surface stays the same with no ugly brown patches or worn areas.
All Weather Outdoor Play
The government is keen to promote sport, particularly in primary schools, because it keeps young children healthy and encourages them to stay active in the future. The installation of synthetic grass fits with this policy as it helps children stay active throughout the academic year. This is because primary school children generally have to stay indoors in wet and muddy weather. However, as synthetic turf provides a cleaner outdoor surface and is self draining, it means school play areas are accessible whatever the weather because the surface isn’t slippery and pupils won’t trail dirt into the school.

Fake grass provides a neat play area that helps promote the school as it gives an excellent year round impression to parents and visitors. With Dayco synthetic grass installers, your grass will be tailored to the school’s requirements as we work with you to create the perfect play area.
